Books: The Sign of the Four

Sherlock Holmes books are fun to read. I got this one from manybooks.net and loaded it in my Kindle.

The Sign of the Four

It’s a story about a murder, a stolen treasure, and the mysteries of colonial India.

There’s even an exciting steam-boat chase on the Thames!

One thing I noticed, is that Watson specifically mentions Holmes smoking a briar pipe. Every time you see Sherlock Holmes in pictures, he’s smoking a calabash. I was, therefore, always under the impression that Holmes smoked a calabash, when he really smokes a briar!

This changes everything.

Update:
Klinutor has pointed out that there is a Sherlock Holmes movie coming out this year. Judging by the trailer, it appears Holmes will be smoking a briar after all.

Park-and-Ride Bike-to-Work Day

Park and Ride 3 mile radius

This is a map of Harrisburg with circles on it. The circles have a radius of 3 miles and are centered on one of Capital Area Transit’s Park-and-Ride locations.

Bike-to-work-day is this Friday. If you live too far away from your job, you can throw your bike in the back of the car, park at one of the park-and-rides and ride your bike from there.

As you can see from the map, nowhere in Harrisburg is more than 3 miles from a Park-and-Ride, so no excuses.

If you need help figuring out which park-and-ride is closest to your work, leave a comment, and I’ll try to help you out.

Commute

I didn’t ride very much this winter. But, it’s bike-to-work week, so I rode in today. My little 5 mile commute kicked my ass. Hard.

I am possibly in the worst shape I’ve been in since I started this blog almost 5 years ago. Ugh.

My semester-from-hell is finally over, so I should have time to ride more regularly, at least until July, when my summer semester starts.

In other news, I replaced the aging cantilevers on the Trek with Tektro cr720s. I am very happy with them so far, but I’m a little concerned that the pads they come with are so long, that they’re going to get hung up in the front fork and make it hard to get the wheel in and out.

Bike Rally

Today was the Pennsylvania Bike Summit.
We all gathered at the Farm Show Complex and posed for some pictures.

Then we rode down to the Capitol.

Various politicians gave speeches. They read the Governor’s declaration of Bike Month and talked about some bills that are currently before the state legislature. One of them says that cars have to give bikes 4 feet of room when passing. One of them makes it a 2nd degree misdemeanor to intimidate cyclists and pedestrians.

This lady is the Special Assistant to the Secretary of Education from the Department of Education. She gave a talk about Safe Routes to School. Evidently, there’s a bazillion dollars in federal funding for this program that the State is just sitting on. Typical.

The dude from the Rails to Trails Conservancy was cool. I must have snapped this picture when he was making a goofy face. He says Pennsylvania has more miles of rail trails than any other state.

I learned some things I didn’t know, like that Cannondale bikes are all made in Pennsylvania, and that Fuji Bikes global headquarters is in Philly.

I ran into Doc at the end of rally. He managed to get a fabulously out-of-focus picture of the group..

One thing that bugged me was how everyone kept talking about “the sport” of bicycling. And most of the people in the ride were decked out to tour the Swiss Alps, not to ride 3 miles from the Farm Show to the Capitol. Bicycling is no more a sport than walking to the corner store is going on a hike.

Other than that, it was a fun morning. I didn’t stick around to talk to my representatives. Politicians kind of give me the willies.

I have a few more pictures in my Gallery, if you like to look at pictures, look there.

Don’t be a loser and miss the first ever Pennsylvania Bike Summit!

It’s Tuesday morning, so call in sick, or skip school, or sell your children, or do whatever you need to do to be there!

We’re meeting at the Farm Show Building at 8:30AM and riding to the Capitol from there.

If we’re lucky, Gov. Rendell will come outside to demonstrate his “mad p-far skillz.”
